We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A Significant Opportunity to Protect Significant trees. You can nominate potential NEW trees for the Significant Tree List.
Any tree meeting the Regulated or Significant Trees criteria is automatically protected under the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016. Previously, to supplement this criterion, the old City of Unley Development Plan had a Significant Tree List.
This was a list highlighting particular special trees in addition to those qualified under the old Development Act 1993.
With the implementation of the new Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016, we have an opportunity to review the Significant Tree list. This by way of a future Planning and Design Code Amendment (Part 10 – Significant Trees (Unley)).
We will be reassessing our current list. Specialists will do this for us.
The significance of this review is we have a possibly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A Significant Opportunity to Protect Significant trees.
Stage I is to add new trees to the list. Trees that have grown since 2002 and who now warrant consideration.
We have consultants already auditing the existing tree listings and updating details including photos, location (including GPS coordinates), and assessment against PDI Act criteria.
All nominations will need assessment against the Act. This may take some time if we receive a significant number of nominations. We can then commence Stage II, which will be to progress a Code Amendment.
The call to you for nominations has been posted on our website, provided to the Your-Say-Unley community, and communicated to other pertinent local community organizations.
This is your chance. Your best chance to protect trees that you believe warrant protecting is by filling in this form.
You have until 30th June.
So.
- Do you know of an extra special tree in your local area that stands out?
- Would you like your exceptional tree included on the list?
